Our neighbors are birders, and we are catching their enthusiasm for bird watching! The bonus for us is that our neighbors feed the birds all year long, and have planted all kinds of bushes and flowers and trees that birds like, so there are quite a variety of birds that come to their yard!
Today we set up our lawn chairs facing their bird feeder, and look at how many different species we saw!
On the neighbor's feeder:
Downy Woodpecker and Common Grackle
European Starling
another one of the Common Grackle
Our neighbor gave us a list of birds that come to her yard regularly, so that has helped novices like us begin to learn to identify them.
Here's our beginning bird watching stuff:
In the Bird binder, we have coloring pages of each of the birds our neighbor listed, and Alaina is coloring them according to the photos in our books and on the internet.
Carolina Wren
American Goldfinch
Black-Capped Chickadee

A great experience for the family and a great way to get to know the neighbors.
ReplyDeleteI know that that was one of your desires. Looks like fun to me.
This is my favorite part of homeschooling. When you can just explore and learn right in your own backyard. You can tell Alaina we had a Cooper's Hawk and her 2 babies in our backyard forest last year. The mama was teaching the babies to hunt. We also have a Barred owl and Stellar Jays. And once we had a Bald Eagle feasting on some roadkill right at the end of our driveway!
ReplyDeleteThat's awesome!

awesome bird watching!! Check this out... I want to get it for Jadyn's birthday! http://www.sallylloyd-jones.com/books/baby-wren-and-the-great-gift/
ReplyDeleteLooks like a really sweet book. I'm sure Jadyn will love it! A Carolina wren built a nest on my neighbor's back porch, and the babies just hatched. Maybe next time you're over here we can go see the babies!
